T-Disc versus K-cup

The biggest difference between Tassimo and Keurig is that they use different coffee pods for their brewing system.

What is K-cup?

What is K-cup?

In the case of Keurig it uses a K-cup, a K-cup is an air-tight container, where ground coffee beans are sealed inside.

Currently there are over 250 types of K-cups available on the market.

When brewing with K-cup you just pop your cup inside the machine, then select your cup size – Keurigs are more flexible when it comes to the programmability.

It let you choose your cup size and brewing temperature as you like.

What is T-disc?

What is T-disc?

The T-disc is similar to K-cup as it is also a container that is air-tight, and protects your coffee from oxygen, light and moisture.

However, they are different because, on the T-disc there is a bar-code. The bar code is printed to tell the brewing system how to brew your coffee: how much water to use, at what temperature, how long etc.

When you are using a T-disc on a Tassimo machine, it will scan the bar-code and tell the machine exactly how it should handle your beverage.

Keurig Vs. Tassimo: Brewing Flexibility

One of the advantages (or disadvantages) of a Tassimo brewer is its simpleness, in other words, it lacks flexibility. Unlike Keurig which allows a lot of programmabilities, Tassimo relies on its bar code on T-disc to brew, even cup sizes are pre-determined, there’s really not much room left for your adjustments.

However thanks to its “sturboness” Tassimo is able to brew specialty coffees like latte, espresso, and cappuccino from the real milk T-disc, a function that Keurig is not capable of. Keurigs are meant for simple coffees but simple coffees only, for specialty coffee you have to buy extra attachments to handle frothing.

Tassimo vs Keurig: Timing of Keurig and Tassimo Coffee Makers

Brewing process for Keurig is really quick, nearly unbeatable. It takes only approximately 1 minute total for a Keurig to brew a full cup.

Furthermore, most models of Keurigs are equipped with a timer, which in my opinion, is a little bit unnecessary as it brews so quick. But still, they are mostly equipped with a timer so you can order it to brew before you’re awake.

Tassimo however, do not have this feature. And because the system of Tassimo actually need the time to read the bar code and find the right recipe.

So it need about an extra 60 seconds, that is 2 minutes to brew a full cup.

For people who are always in a hurry in the morning, a Keurig seems more attractive. But since the time difference is not really that much – only one minute, you will be satisfied with either one.

Tassimo or Keurig? – Which is suitable for you?

As you may have already found, both Tassimo and Keurig are great single cup coffee makers and you will can’t go wrong with either.

But in some cases one is more suitable than the other, that is: if you love to use your own ground coffee beans but not the provided pre-packaged T-Disc/K-cup. You should go for the Keurigs.

For you can buy a reusable K-cup filter called “my K-cup”, which allows you to use your own ground coffee instead of the pre-packaged one.
